Christmas in Argyll! Six festive things to do on Argyllís Secret Coast

Christmas in Argyll! Six festive things to do on Argyllís Secret Coast
Twinkling lights, carol singing, festive menus and a Christmas market – it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Here are six ways to celebrate the festive season on Argyll’s Secret Coast.

1.The festivities kick off with the Tighnabruaich Christmas Lights Switch On (Friday 2nd December, 5pm). Gather at the heart of the village to see the Tighnabruaich Primary School children switch on the lights, join in the carol singing, visit Santa in his grotto and enjoy some mulled wine/mulled juice and mince pies. All the shops, cafés and restaurants will have their Christmas decorations up and will be staying open for a spot of late-night shopping. Donations from the event will go to the primary school.

2.The next day pop along to the Kames Hall for the Kames Christmas Market (Saturday 3rd December, 10am to 1pm). Organised by the Kyles Allotment Group, this will be a bumper market with over 20 stalls groaning with festive goodies, gorgeous crafts and gifts, artisan breads, local cheese, Shellfield saltmarsh lamb, chutneys, jams and much more. Shop local, sip on some mulled cider and listen to some seasonal music. There will also be a jumbo Christmas raffle.

3.Finish off the weekend with a Festive Gourmet Evening at The Royal An Lochan (Saturday 3rd December). The seven course set menu with wines to match is full of Christmas cheer. Expect some surprises – there are rumours of ‘main course canapés’ and a multi-bird poultry main. The evening costs £54.95 per person. There is also the option of dinner, bed and breakfast for £195 based on two sharing, but we hear there are just a few rooms left! Book on 01700 811 239.

4.‘Tis the season to be merry, so celebrate at a Portavadie Festive Party Night. With Christmas punch on arrival, a four-course set menu and a disco with DJ Stephen McCafferty, it’s guaranteed to make your festivities go off with a bang! Two of the nights are fully booked but there are still places left on the Saturday 17th December. Tickets are £39. You can make a night of it and stay over from as little as £30 per person, per night, based on two sharing. Book on 01700 811075.

5. Gather friends and family for a pre-Christmas get together and tuck into some fantastic festive fare. Botanica is offering a special Festive Dinner Menu from 25th November to 21st December. Enjoy the very best locally sourced seasonal food in lovely, relaxed surroundings. Two courses is £19.95 and 3 courses is £23.95. Book on 01700 811186. Portavadie’s Festive Menu is available in the Marina Restaurant & Bar from 1st to 22nd December 2016. You’ll find traditional favourites on the menu along with something a little bit different. Lunch is £18.50 (£22.50 for 3 courses) and dinner is £32.00, which includes a half bottle of wine per person. Book on 01700 811075.

6. And finally for a completely different shopping experience this Christmas, why not head to Argyll’s Secret Coast? Avoid the crowds and enjoy stunning winter scenery as you explore the area. Tighnabruaich Gallery has a fabulous collection of art, jewellery, glass, ceramics, textiles and more. Botanica Deli & Gift Shop is packed with great locally made gifts, as well as Christmas cards, decorations, stocking fillers and wrapping paper. The Shop at Portavadie is a treasure-trove of coastal-inspired clothing, accessories, gifts and more. The Dairy at Carry Farm showcases textiles by Fiona McPhail and functional and decorative ceramics made by Karen McPhail. The Dairy is closed during the winter, but if you call Fiona on 01700 811 717 she can arrange to open up. And don’t forget you can pick up seasonal treats for your Christmas Day lunch, including a fine selection of wine, local ales and whiskies, at Kames Village Store and Kyles Premier Store.

Merry Christmas!
