Otter Ferry - the best-kept secret on Argyll's Secret Coast

Otter Ferry - the best-kept secret on Argyll's Secret Coast
Alastair Barge has lived with his family in Otter Ferry since 1980 and is a member of the Otter Ferry Pier Association. He fills us in on a thriving community and one of the hidden gems on Argyll’s Secret Coast.

The sleepy hamlet of Otter Ferry is found on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne tucked behind the Otter Spit. It’s a beautiful spot and a favourite with sailors. It’s one of the few anchorages on this side of the loch, as the spit provides shelter from the prevailing south westerly winds.

The Oystercatcher sits at the centre of Otter Ferry, opening out onto the beautiful beach and old pier. Once upon a time a ferry from east to west Loch Fyne operated from here. With a livestock market, school, ferry, the Old Ferry Inn and the main road to Tighnabruaich, Otter Ferry was a busy little place in the olden days.

The revival of Otter Ferry began in 1993 when the seasonal tearoom was refurbished to create the Oystercatcher Pub/Restaurant and Oyster Bar. This quickly became the heart of the community and is now a busy pub buzzing with locals and visitors alike who come to enjoy the real ales, home-cooked food and stunning location.

In 2003 the community formed the Otter Ferry Pier Association. The aim was to develop access to Otter Ferry by sea. We’re blessed with our sheltered anchorage, but boats and their skippers are now, understandably, looking for moorings and easy access to the land and onshore facilities. As well as increasing the number of moorings to 15, the group has already installed a 40m pontoon. So now sailors making a trip into upper Loch Fyne are pretty much guaranteed a mooring!

Otter Ferry is one of the hidden gems on Argyll’s Secret Coast. Whether you come here by land or sea, you’ll enjoy beautiful scenery, bountiful wildlife, great facilities and a warm welcome from the local community.
