All aboard the Morag

All aboard the Morag
Donald Clark runs DC Marine Boat Trips, offering boat trips up the Kyles of Bute on board his refurbished fishing vessel the Morag. It’s a great way to get close to the local wildlife and enjoy a spot of fishing. Here he tells us what you might see from the sea this spring.

Over the winter months we carried out the usual maintenance on the Morag to get her ready for the season’s boat trips. There were no dramatic modifications this year, just the usual painting, a few minor repairs and engines servicing to make sure she was ship-shape for her launch on the last day of March.

Sightseeing in the spring is special in these parts, and where better to take advantage of the spectacular views than from a boat? The season started in early April for the Morag with Argyll’s Secret Coast being blessed with a few weeks of dry and bright – if a little chilly – weather. We had a good number of visitors to the area, who took advantage of the bank holidays coinciding with the school break. Every day the gardens and forests surrounding the beautiful Kyles of Bute turned greener and now the Rhododendrons are in full bloom turning the hillsides purple.

The wildlife is also taking advantage of the benign climate with the local colony of seals basking in the sun between tides and the sea birds roosting at the Burnt Islands. The geese and eider ducks have already hatched. The porpoises are back in strength and are less timid than previous years, approaching the boat closely before diving away – a fantastic sight. The first fish were caught in mid-May and as the water warms up we can expect the mackerel any day now.

The Morag operates from Tighnabruaich Pier and can accommodate ten passengers. There are regular set departures times or you can book to charter the whole boat for periods of one hour.
